Faculty of Biomedical Engineering Building, 2009

The project was developed in response to the competition organized by the Silesian University of Technology. Requirements were related to the concept of large-building, located in one of the two selected lots in Gliwice, Poland. Building should house a new Faculty of the University, including classrooms, laboratories, conference rooms, administrative space and recreation.

The selected lot is located at the end of the planned main pedestrian axis of the academic district, near to the city park and a busy street. Responding to the requirements of the site and the functionality of the object, we proposed a system with an atrium, around which distinct functions were optimally deployed. Functions that require direct connections, which for reasons of ergonomics and technology had to be placed on different floors, are to be combined using bridges, slung over the atrium. The atrium can be reached through an underground passage located on the main axis of communication of academic district, what makes it easier to manage building’s sustainable and economical form.

The most important feature of the building is its sustainability. We planned to achieve this effect by using a double glazing wall with greenery grown between the wall’s layers and the appliance of typical solutions designed for the intelligent building.
